What is perimenopause and how long can it last?
Perimenopause is the transition phase leading up to menopause, where the body begins to experience changes in hormone levels. It typically starts in a woman’s 40s but can occur earlier. Common symptoms include irregular periods, hot flushes, mood changes, and sleep disturbances.
Perimenopause can last anywhere from 4 to 10 years before menopause occurs. The duration and intensity of symptoms can vary greatly between individuals.
What is menopause?
Menopause is the point in time when a woman has not had a menstrual period for 12 consecutive months. It usually occurs around the age of 51 but can vary for each individual. Menopause marks the end of fertility, and many women experience symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness.
What are the main symptoms of perimenopause and menopause?
Symptoms vary from woman to woman and can include:
• Irregular periods
• Hot flushes
• Night sweats
• Sleep disturbances
• Mood swings or irritability
• Decreased libido
• Vaginal dryness
• Memory problems or difficulty concentrating (often called ‘brain fog’)
What treatments are available for managing menopause?
Treatment options include:
• Menopausal Hormone Therapy (MHT): The most common treatment to alleviate symptoms, such as hot flushes and vaginal dryness.
• Non-hormonal medications: Antidepressants or other medications can help with mood swings and hot flushes.
• Lifestyle changes: Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and stress management techniques can help manage symptoms.
• Vaginal oestrogen: For vaginal dryness, oestrogen-based creams, rings, or tablets can be effective.
Is it safe to use Menopausal Hormone Therapy (MHT)?
MHT is generally safe for most women, but it may not be suitable for everyone. The risks and benefits should be discussed with your doctor, considering factors such as age, medical history, and the severity of your symptoms.
Can menopause affect my mental health?
Yes, menopause can lead to mood swings, irritability, anxiety, and depression due to hormonal fluctuations. It’s important to seek professional advice if you’re struggling with mental health symptoms.
How can I manage weight gain during menopause?
During menopause, changes in metabolism can lead to weight gain, especially around the abdomen. A balanced diet, regular exercise, and strength training can help manage weight. It’s also important to focus on reducing stress, as high cortisol levels can contribute to weight gain.
Can I still get pregnant during perimenopause?
Yes, pregnancy is still possible during perimenopause, as ovulation can occur irregularly. If you don’t want to become pregnant, it’s important to continue using contraception until you have been without periods for 12 months.
